The FT-65R is a very compact, ruggedly constructed Handheld VHF/UHF with three selectable power settings 5W / 2.5W / 0.5W allowing each user to select the power they need. If I lost mine, I'd definately replace it with another FT60R.FT-65R - VHF/UHF 2 Meter/70cm Dual Band FM Handheld Transceiver
I run medium setting 90% of the time and the 2 watts keep me in the local repeater without any problems at all. 5 watts, medium is 2 watts (most handhelds medium setting is 1 watt) and high is 5 watts. One of the features I love is the power setting - Low is. Also, the book recommends that you do not place it on the charger until the Low Battery indicator shows on the screen in order to make sure the battery charges to it's capacity.
Do not just let it sit on the charger to keep it "topped off", as you will damage the battery. A speaker/mike may help but I have not purchased one yet.Īlso, unless you plan on buying a drop in charger for it, be very mindful that the HT should only be connected to the wallwart for 10 to 12 hours at a time. The ONE drawback I have found, is the audio is not as loud as I'd like it to be in a noisy environment. Over the years I have owned an Icom Z1a, Yaesu FT-530, Rad Shack HTX202/404, Yaesu VX5R.This is the Best HT I have ever owned: rugged - it has some WEIGHT to it - does not feel like a toy in your hand, clear audio reports, tons of memories, battery lasts a long time between charges.
